The purpose of my final project was to determine the most popular music genres and venues of SXSW 2015. Using data obtained from the SXSW 2015 Music Event Schedule, I not only had a complete list of bands and musicians separated into their respective genres, but also all the venues that they performed at. Seven of the most popular genres were selected for the purpose of the study.
Blues, Funk, Punk, Rock, Country, Jazz and Metal were the seven music genres that were selected from the SXSW 2015 Music Event Schedule. In total (among the seven genres), there were 982 live performances. The venues that housed the majority of these live performances were The Saxon Pub, The Lucky Lounge, Cheer Up Charlie’s, Valhalla, The Dirty Dog Bar, Hotel Vegas and The 720 Club. Both the genres and venues were displayed in Google Fusion Charts for easy viewing. I found the Google Fusion Charts to be the easiest of the charts to use for the purposes of this project. Embedding the code into the html pages was far simpler and more manageable than trying to implement code for High Charts or Chart.js.
My final project also contains an interview with a frequent SXSW attendee, a list of bands in their respective genres, a media gallery and a personality quiz that suggests a user’s preferred genre of music.
