Meeting Stacie Chan was an eye opening experience. Learning about the processes of Google News was fascinating.
1. First off, I had no idea this was a free service and any publishing franchise could opt into it.
2. I didn’t know Google does not make a profit from Google News, which makes me wonder what will be the future of Google News? What direction do they plan on heading toward and can I be a part of it?
3. Chan who has a journalism degree is working for one of the largest technology companies in the world. She knows enough about coding to talk to her engineers and produce a product, which viewers can easily maneuver. This shows journalist who are familiar with code can find jobs in nontraditional newsrooms.
4. Google News is so important large news publications must compromise their paywall restrictions to be on it.
5. Also, mentors nowadays are called sponsors, so find a sponsor – someone who will put in a good word for you if they hear about a job.
Overall, it was an interesting discussion and made me think about whether I would want to one day work for a technology company.
