Hello all,

I’m Dominique Mercado, an undergrad graduating in May with a degree in public relations. I took webpub last semester with Dale Blasingame and absolutely loved it. It’s just a fun puzzle to me that I enjoy figuring out. I work with Bobcat Promotions, a student-run PR firm, and was handed the task of revamping its entire website, so this class will definitely help me with that task.

I haven’t had too much experience with data journalism thus far, but after reading about it I am definitely eager to learn. As it pertains to music, I couldn’t find many data visualizations representing it (so I see the need to expand in this area). I had two different approaches on how to incorporate data visualizations with music. First, I thought about how it could help the music company/musician figure out the best way to go about online promotions of their music to the public. Which online promotions are generating the most traffic? Which are being shared the most?  Are videos the most effective? Are images more shared? Using analytics to track fans would be extremely helpful to the music community itself.

With storytelling, it would be fun if music blogs, magazines or journals could use data to introduce fans of one genre of music to other musicians within that genre. So, they have an interactive visualization where they could type the name of a musician they were a fan of in and then a drop-down of artists that are similar to their musician type pops up. It would be something people would be sure to use multiple times.

Hopefully that’s on the right track!
