Hello! My name is Andrea Cordova and I am an undergraduate mass communications electronic media student. I have a serious passion for the digital world. My ideal morning is a day where I can wake up and have enough time to sip my tea (loaded with honey of course) and catch up on new technology news. Whether it’s a new device, cool video game software, or “5 things your iPhone can do for you,” I want to hear about it.
One might ask, why would someone like me care about data journalism. My answer is simple. I want the facts. If you’re going to tell me your operating system is better than mine, I want you to be able to prove it. The only thing that can’t lie in this world is numbers (…or forces of nature…). A really great data journalist will be able to put together that information, and display it to the world!
The future of data journalism is in the minds of the people of today. As cliche as that sounds, it’s actually much deeper. In today’s society, people are left in the dark about serious issues. We have young ladies bashing on feminism simply because they don’t know the proper definition of what feminism is. We have people who say “why should I give a damn about Paris” because they have no idea what actually happened there. This society is undereducated and needs to be guided to the light. The main problem is, they love to argue.
The one thing people can’t argue with is numbers. They way technology is advancing and analytical tools are being incorporated in to all sorts of social mediums, information containing irrefutable truth can be accessible to all generations on all platforms. With a good story, a good journalist, a good designer, and the truth in numbers, we can change the world with data journalism.
