For my final project, I decided to research more in depth about a social media I’m really passionate about: Twitch. This website is targeted at people who don’t know what Twitch is or for people looking to start out on Twitch. With the use of a lot of research (Twitch has too many accounts to scrape the data- we’re talking hundreds of millions of profiles) I was able to find the top 50 streamers out there in the world, and base most of my research off them.
I found out that Twitch actually has a lot of data easily accessible to the public via GitHub, which made working with API and JSON much easier than I anticipated. My biggest success with this project was being able to get a live data feed through a chart. It was actually pretty simple with the use of JSON and the almighty google search.
This chart is sorted by viewers currently in the stream at the given time of loading the page, but it can also be easily modified to read out followers or channel views instead. I chose current viewers because I felt like that would add more variety to my story. For the duration of my data, I talk about the same 50 streamers, so filtering this chart by current views generates a slightly different list of streamers, and I think that makes it all just a little more interesting. Especially since the number 1 streamer isn’t live 24/7, it allows some more light to others who may not have quite so many follows or channel views.
I really enjoyed writing the articles for this as well. I interviewed users of Twitch as well as performed extensive research on products and processes of the Twitch environment. I combed over everything that I felt was a necessary knowledge to understanding the community of Twitch. Twitch isn’t for everyone, but it’s changing the world of the video game industry immensely. So even if you’re not in to video games, it’s still worth looking in to for the simple impact it has on such a large range of the worlds population.
