I really enjoyed this panel a lot. I didn’t get to actually attend this panel, but I did get to stream it live. The panelists included Ashley Hebler, front-end Web developer, Volusion; Josue Plaza, junior PHP developer, Bravelets; and Glynn Jordan, Web developer at Clearhead.
I really liked hearing from graduates of Texas State and hearing how they got to work at the companies that they are at now.
They also brought up how when they started working that at the beginning of their jobs, there were times that they felt that maybe they couldn’t do what their job wanted like maybe it was too hard, but that they did everything they could to learn.
They gave great information on places that we can get more coding skills from. I even googled them and signed up for two of them.
I also like how I think it was Josue who said, google everything and how Stack Overflow is their best friend. Cindy asked how they solve problems when it comes to coding, which I know is something she really makes sure to let us know in class is that we have to figure out and troubleshoot our own issues. Just nice to hear that even people who are in the work force doing web development go through the struggles still of not getting the code perfect all the time.
I even asked a question to Ashley about women working in the field and if they are a growing number. I’ve always noticed how it’s a male dominated field and with each class and even in our class there always seems to be more men than women. Ashley said she did notice that more women are entering the field and also recommended a meet up group(which I signed up for) in Austin for women coders.
I just really enjoyed this panel, along with many others I attended, but this one in particular because web development is something I am very interested in doing.
