As a military photojournalist, we have a saying, “Semper Gumby”, which means “always flexible.” We adhere to this principle simply due to the fact that the story you want to tell is not necessarily the story that you tell.

For my final project, initially, I wanted to show the viewer that the music scene in Austin would support major Rock-N-Roll bands. With the fall through of a major recording act’s interview, and a review of the data, the story morphed into the story, which I am telling. Austin taunts itself as the Music Capital of the world, a difficult claim to prove or disprove, however, can Austin be the music capital of Texas?

It all started in 1991, when Lillian Standfield, an Austin musician, wanted to promote the music scene and came up with the slogan, “Music Capital of the USA.” The city of Austin did a little more research and discovered that Austin had more live music venues per capita than Nashville, Memphis, Los Angeles, New York and Vegas, therefore, since everything is bigger in Texas, the slogan changed to “Music Capital of the World.” read the story here at, Raven Music Story.
