Mike Cox spoke to students about how to succeed at a career in Media Relations Wednesday as part of Texas State University’s Mass Comm Week. Cox, a veteran journalist, has published over 20 books and is currently a writer for texasescapes.com.
Cox has had a long career and has covered some of the biggest news events in Texas history such as the Waco Standoff and the UT Tower Shooting. His experiences offers some valuable insight for students who are looking to pursue a career in public relations. His biggest advice for students is to make sure they have a thick skin and are good at thinking on their feet.
Cox also talked about the importance of clarity, content, and precision. He said students should have the “B.S. factor”, an ability to “say something even when you are not.”
