My name is Christopher Garza, a Texas State 
Undergraduate, an advertising major with a minor in creative writing. So data journalism, huh? What is it to me? Well, I love telling stories and especially listening to or reading new ones. I am kind of a junkie in that regard, because I don’t care about the medium they are told in. If they are good then I will take an interest. However, my fascination with data journalism is a little more heart throbbing than most. Growing up as a kid I really loved learning the history or reasons as to why something occurs. Good or bad. It didn’t matter what it was, honestly. It could be anything from where do babies come from, why was my mom’s truck being repossessed, or what events lead to the making of a particular film? All of these questions stemmed from having this little burning sensation that just can’t be smothered until I get the facts. Call it my bullshit O’meter. But, with numbers the data is presented, the facts are there, and all I have to do is comb through the mounds of data to see what’s relevant and what’s not. Never before has a form of journalism spoken to me in such a manner. So, in summary, what does data journalism mean to me? Well, it’s a means of story telling that gets the facts straight from the horses mouth. No bullshit. Unless the data is faked or corrupted. But then we have a whole other problem. The data we use is just another tool to tell a story.
As for it’s role in the future of Journalism. Personally, I believe that it is going to lead to more accurate, interactive, and reactive reporting. And one day will be considered the norm of journalism because information is constantly being transmitted and always changing. People are being bombarded with information every time they step out of the house, ride the bus, drive a car, look at their phones, sit at a computer, or even when they dream(processing learned daily information). So how can we filter out all the nonsense? In my opinion using a more accurate system of filtering the crap articles and hacks that are pushing the un-important click-bait journalism down our throats. There is a difference between informative and 10 tips to please your man or lose weight fast.
The ideas that I have for my final project consist of breaking and entering statistics with a map showing you where most of them occur, a project portraying the amount of advertisements we are exposed to through multimedia devices, the consistency of clean water in your area by monthly analyzations, or the areas that have the highest increases in electric bill spikes during the seasons rate changes…etc. I haven’t really landed on one yet.
