Trei Brundrett from Vox Media was the first speaker I attended during Mass Comm Week 2014 and I’m glad I did.

Vox-Media

Vox Media is an online publisher that has various websites under it’s belt including: The Verge, SB Nation, Polygon , Eater , Curbed, Racked, and the recently added Vox.com.

The coolest thing in my opinion is that all of the websites are so different. SB Nation is a sports website where over 300 teams have pages that have intense fan interaction and Eater is a website about restaurants and nightlife. Racked is about fashion, where Polygon is a gaming website.

All of these website have one thing in common: Chorus.

“I learned to code because I wanted to make things.” – Trei Brundrett

Chorus is the CMS, or content management system that Vox created.

Trei said that to Vox, community is very important. It’s about interacting and giving users tools that are meaningful and  a place to give their opinions. They built a real-time threaded commenting system and updated it based on what users said worked or not.
