As part of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Texas State University, every year they organize and dedicate a week for students to connect with professionals to interact and discuss the world in mass communication. This is a great opportunity for students to network with professionals and get a better idea of how mass media works in the real world.
One of the guest speakers that appeared was the intelligent Trei Brundrett, chief product manager for Vox Media. Vox Media is a digital media company that has seven different editorial brands. This online publishing platform is one of the fastest growing media companies in America. With each of the seven different publications targeting different audiences, they are receiving an overwhelming amount of followers!
The seven brands are as follows:
- Curbed. This publication has the target audience who are interested in real estate, interior decorations, home improvements, etc.
- Eater. As one of their most popular brands, Eater focuses on dining and drinking in cities around the country.
- Poylgon. This one is for all the gamers and tech-savvy people. This provides the gaming community with a sophisticated and enjoyable platform.
- Racked. Where are all the ladies at? Racked is the place to go when looking for the latest and greatest fashion and style trends across the country!
- SB Nation. Now for the fellows. This publication is the largest network of sports-related communities and online sports media.
- The Verge. What kind of world would it be without a technology brand. The Verge focuses it’s interest on the newest science, technology, art, and culture.
- Vox. Last but not least, the newest edition to Vox Media. Vox is elegantly setup as a general interest news site for the 21st century.
Trei Brundrett discussed a variety of topics that ranged from the brainstorming and creation of this company to their beliefs on having the best customer experience possible. One of the most interesting thing Trei shared was that he never took one coding class in his entire life. His degree was in astronomy! Now he is a webmaster for one of the fastest growing media companies. When asked how he did it, his response was simply hard work, self perseverance, and having the desire to create things and using coding as another tool to create those new things.
Having heard from a professional who can share real world experiences and advice is inspiring. Knowing that you can become an important attribute to such a successful company with nothing but hard work and dedication gives students the hope and passion they need to continue striving for their dreams.
