Stacie Chan (@staciechan) was on campus Wednesday to speak as part of Texas State’s Mass Communication Week.
In a presentation to students Chan talked about her path to her current career at Google News, and what it was like working for such a massive company. Following her background, Chan talked about the organization, her work in the department, and the types of qualities the platform looks for in prospective publishers.
When prompted by students as to what the company looks for in potential new blood, Chan said, “being a self-starter is really important,” emphasizing the need for individuals that are able to take action. “Everyone has those moonshine [big ideas] ideas, but very few people are willing to take the necessary steps towards those ideas.”
In addition to her personal history, Chan discussed several elements about the Google News platform. She described the background and process, as well as the types of support that the company provides to content creators. When asked by a student about the application criteria, Chan pointed to this article titled “Getting Into Google News,” providing tips and information to publishers to enter the platform.
Following her personal presentation, Chan participated in a panel discussion with Annie Werner from Tumblr. A video of the panel has been made availableon YouTube.
