Two floods have wracked Central Texas in only a year, far surpassing records and setting precedents for the community. For this project, I want to use data to show how music helped this part of Texas heal. Once the shock subsided from the Memorial Day floods I saw fundraisers, concerts and benefits of every kind bring in funds to support Wimberley are other areas. Don Ferguson, Wimberley city administrator, said Wimberley is healing quicker than any other city he’s seen that has been hit by a natural disaster. I believe a big part of that was how residents used music to come together.
~For my final project, I want to visualize the amount of money and donations given out of the multiple flood benefit concerts over the summer. This will be a one stop shop to understand all the funds that flooded Wimberley.
I plan on getting data and interviewing people at the Barnabas Connection and My Neighbor’s Keeper for the content of this project. These nonprofits received the majority of funds from the benefit concerts and will have itemized lists of the data.
For the structure of the project, I want to begin with a form users can fill out to see what they think was raised and where. Then I want to include interactive charts of was actually raised. I’m thinking of a bar graph showing all the different benefits, a pie chart to show the overall percentage of where funds came from (concerts, private donations, etc.) I’ll probably just use Google Fusion Tables or Highchart since I understood those methods the best.
I’m not sure which would be best, but I want to also create a word cloud of what were the buzzwords during these concerts or a map of where people were talking about the music benefitting flood recovery. Wimberley and western Hays County is a bit of an older crowd, so not all of them may have used twitter.
Finally I want to create an interactive map to show were the money that was raised went.
The site will be bootstrapped and I hope to incorporate some of the show/hide features. I’ve worked with these nonprofits before, so it shouldn’t be a problem to grab the data. I will still look for places I can scrape data from.
