My final project is a dive into Austin’s Art in Public Places (AIPP) program. I had an interview yesterday with one of the program coordinators. I went in with the idea of doing a story that centered primarily on the distribution of the art, possibly along economic lines. Talking with the coordinator gave me some new directions for the story, which is basically taking the shape now of an exploration of the process, from beginning to end, and getting a work of art included in the program. The data portion of the project will still be derived from the same data that tells the location of the art and will provide the user with a series of maps, based on zip codes, where the art hangs with dropped points that can be clicked on to get the exact address and some additional information. The only missing piece, at this point, for my reporting is that I want to speak with an artist whose work has been accepted by the program to get a perspective on the full AIPP process for an artist’s point of view.
Below is a sketch of the very rough outline of the site itself. I will have a relevant picture at the top with a menu sandwiched between it and a summary of the project. The menu will link to three pages, each of which will follow a similar page structuring with a picture, menu and then text area. The first page will be one where the art is. This one will have the interactive data component to it, where people can select a zipcode and see what works of art are present within it. The “Why” page will be an exploration of why certain works of art are hung in certain places. I got information about this process during my interview. The final page, “The Process,” will be about the process of opening a call for art, the submission of proposals and the eventual selection and displaying of one of the submitted works.
