sxsw-2015Wow, I can’t believe the semester flew by! Time flies when you’re having fun:D

So, I did my Final Project on Crime During SxSW. I would have to say that the hardest part of this wasn’t so much putting everything together, but sorting through the data. I downloaded the csv from the Austin City Website and, there was a years worth of every incident reported by APD. I had to sort through and separate and place everything how I wanted it. This took the most time.

I wanted to add the interactive parts as well to give the user some things to click. I chose the drop down menu bar chart. The next piece was the news app that we created in the final days of class. I really liked this when we did it, so I wanted to somehow incorporate it in my project but I was finding a tough time figuring out what information I would place here. I finally decided to use the Austin Police and surrounding Police information. They even have Twitter handles.

I had to manipulate this bootstrap template as well, which was tedious. I chose a template that I liked at first, but then as I kept adding I just didn’t like the way it looked. I already went so far and just didn’t want to have to change it. So, yeah big lesson there. Choose a good template.

There are still a few things I know I need to fix, like centering the heat map section. I googled it and played with it forever. I will have to go back and figure it out. I tried manipulating the div, center attributes and everything to no avail. All in all, I know there are some things I can perfect and I’ll continue to play around with it and keep learning.

I really had a blast this semester. This was one class where you really hit the ground running and this class takes how much you learned in web design and then puts it to a test. I feel like because of this class, I have gained so much knowledge on web development and this is something I definitely would love to keep doing and get even better.

I enjoyed meeting all of you and wish you all the best of luck! Maybe one day we will end up working together! Congrats to the Graduates as well! and Thank you Cindy!
