hipsterSalutations coding compatriots!

I hope you all had a good weekend and managed to find some interesting data to use for our current project. In the event that you’re still on the hunt, I’ve got a couple sources that you might want to check out. But you’ve probably never heard of them, hence the hipster kitty.

First and foremost, it’s worth pointing out that as Texas State students, we receive access to a plethora of data libraries and articles available via the library. This collection is nothing short of massive- it includes everything from census information to scholarly articles on internet memes. It’s mucho cray-cray.

To reach the database index, start by navigating your browser to the Texas State library page at: http://library.txstate.edu/

From the menu bar, select “Articles & More” under Research & Instruction.

Then, simply select whatever category of information your query falls under. Is it a music-related search? Try that. Is it marketing information? Go for it. You’ll be taken to a page with dozens of different databases for your perusal, and it’s bound to have whatever you’re looking for. Happy hunting!

On a different note, I’ve been rummaging the net looking for interesting stories to tell with music, Austin, and of course, data. One of my faveo-o site is this thing called Craigslist, and boy-oh-boy, it’s a used-crap data goldmine.

Not only can it represent information in the form of maps (who doesn’t love maps?) but it also boasts a strong community in virtually every major city in America.

It’s a pretty powerful platform when you think about it- I mean, you’re literally only a handful of clicks away from comparing the number of musicians looking for work in Austin with, say, the number of musicians looking for work in New Orleans. What if we wanted to know about gigs looking for people? Or people selling audio equipment? Or people looking for band members? Yeah, CL has it covered.

And so I’ll probably head in this direction for the project. I’ll grab a list of the “most musical cities in America” and see if those trends are reflected with the Craigslist numbers, or if they’re way off base. Could be interesting.

I can see the article now: What City is the Musical King of Craigslist?
