I would like to create a story of how the landscape of venues in Austin has changed and how that is impacting the music industry. In the Austin Music Census an excerpt explains how legacy and history of a venue draws in tourists. However, venues seem to be turning over every three to seven years, according to the data. I could get data from the census and from old city maps and permit data. I want to create a timeline slider where you could literally watch popular venue areas change over time. If my inferences are correct, more change will occur in the recent years.
For the city permit data, I’ll probably need to put in a FIO soon or start researching their site on my own. I’ll need to know the basic values of what the data is representing and terminology used for the building/operating permits. Also, I’ll need to research what construction ordinances went in and when. Doing so will add context to the data I find.
This site is a raw database for Austin building/development permits. If I play around with it long enough I may find all I need for this story.
I also still like the idea of using data to see if venues, festivals, etc. have become more accessible and/or accepting of people with disabilities. While living with a disability is a very personal piece of information, I’m sure there is secondary data I could use to find out if these individuals are going to the music scene. The Austin Music Census, old city maps and permit data and articles from the early 90’s, when the Americans with Disabilities Act was enacted, would paint a picture of how Austin has changed.
