Cody HeadshotHi! My name is Cody Herring and I am a Strategic Communication major at Texas State University! I did my undergraduate at Texas State and received my B.A. in Advertising. After working at a newspaper for two years as an advertising consultant I decided to return to graduate school to expand my knowledge and expertise in the field. I am currently a second year grad student and graduate this May. I am also an Austin-based improv and TV/film actor. My focus in advertising is words and visuals, a “Creative” to be exact. I have focused more on copywriting than art direction, but I have a passion for both.

I must admit I don’t have much experience with music (other than singing it badly in the car) or data visualizations (other than viewing them), so I am excited to be a part of figuring out how to use them both to create a story.  Having such a limited knowledge of both of these topics, I feel like my questions I would like answered may be pretty generic.

One question I would like to see answered is, is there a correlation between where a band is located and what genre of music they play? A second question that would be interesting to see answered is percentage of female band member broken down in vocals and instruments. I’ve always been wowed when I see a female bassist because it’s not very often that you see that. Another thing I would like to investigate is in songs performed by Texas artists, which Texas locations are mentioned most frequently in the lyrics? This could be cities, counties, or landmarks. It would be interesting to see where these artists draw some of their inspiration from. And lastly, I think it would be interesting, from an advertising perspective, to see which brands are mentioned most frequently by Texas artists..

These are just some thoughts, if you have any improvements to these, feel free to share!

I’ll leave you with my favorite Texas artist, Dan Dyer. At 20, I used to sneak into Momo’s to watch his sets with about ten of my friends.. It was my first experience with live local music and was one of my favorite experiences of college..

Music, data, and a big picture.
